2,000-Pound Sea Lion 'Chonkers' Delights SF Tourists
A massive Steller sea lion nicknamed "Chonkers" has become San Francisco's newest celebrity, drawing crowds to Pier 39 as he lounges among much smaller California sea lions. The rare visitor weighs as much as a small car and traveled hundreds of miles from northern waters.
A sea lion the size of a Volkswagen is stealing hearts at one of San Francisco's most famous landmarks.
Tourists are flocking to Pier 39 to catch a glimpse of "Chonkers," a rare Steller sea lion estimated to weigh between 1,500 and 2,000 pounds. The massive marine mammal has been lounging among the pier's usual residents, California sea lions that look tiny by comparison.
"He's like a Volkswagen! He's so huge!" visitor Oluwaseyi Akinbobola exclaimed after rushing to see the animal.
Experts believe Chonkers traveled from waters off Washington or Oregon to reach San Francisco Bay. Laura Gill, public programs manager at The Marine Mammal Center in nearby Sausalito, says the protected docks offer everything a sea lion could want: shelter from predators, calm waters, and plenty of easy meals like anchovies, herring and rockfish.
Despite his enormous size, Chonkers has been spotted trying to snuggle with the smaller sea lions for warmth. "He sticks out like a sore thumb," Gill noted with a smile.

Sunny's Take
There's something wonderfully democratic about Chonkers just showing up and claiming his spot among the locals. He didn't ask permission or worry about fitting in. He saw a good thing and decided to stay.
The scene at Pier 39 has become a joyful reminder that nature still surprises us. Visitors gather each morning, cameras ready, hoping to spot the gentle giant flopped on the docks. Parents lift children onto their shoulders for a better view. Strangers share excited whispers and point when he moves.
Sea lions have called Pier 39 home since shortly after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, when a small group discovered the safe haven. Over three decades, they've become one of San Francisco's most beloved attractions, drawing millions of visitors who delight in their barking, sunbathing, and playful shoving matches.
Now Chonkers has added a new chapter to that story. While he's most visible in the early morning hours and can be harder to spot later in the day, patient visitors are being rewarded with an unforgettable sight.
Officials say it's unclear whether more Steller sea lions will follow, but for now, the oversized visitor has become an overnight sensation at one of the city's most popular destinations. Sometimes the best moments are the ones nobody planned.
