24-Year-Old Corey Heim Wins Historic Brickyard 400

Corey Heim didn't just beat his competition at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday. He had to outrace his own team owner to make history.

The 24-year-old part-time NASCAR Cup Series driver executed a bold outside move on the final restart, passing team co-owner Denny Hamlin with 35 laps remaining. From there, he held off two of NASCAR's best to claim his first Brickyard 400 title.

Heim finished just 0.287 seconds ahead of Christopher Bell and less than a second ahead of Joey Logano. The victory made him the first Cup driver to win twice in his first 15 career starts since racing legend A.J. Foyt accomplished the feat in 1965.

"Just had to be aggressive, man, it's for the win," Heim said after climbing from his car. The Georgia native didn't even need a full-time ride to pull off the historic achievement.

The drama peaked on that final restart when Heim made his move. He squeezed past Hamlin on the outside, a risky maneuver that dropped his team owner from first to fifth in seconds. Hamlin never recovered, extending his winless streak at Indianapolis to 18 races.

"That was a damn handful," he admitted. "I was hanging on for dear life once the shade went down and the pace picked up."
