Young Indian man Amit Kumar practicing acting expressions in front of mirror at home

25-Year-Old Crowdfunds Acting School After Father's Death

🦸 Hero Alert

After losing his father and becoming his family's provider at 19, Amit Kumar spent six years teaching himself acting through YouTube videos and won a national competition. Now he's raising funds for professional training that could turn his self-taught skills into a real career.

Every evening after exhausting workdays, Amit Kumar stands in front of his mirror for 10 to 15 minutes, practicing lines and studying acting videos on his phone. For six years, this has been his acting school, his mentor, and his reminder that dreams don't have to die when life gets hard.

The 25-year-old from Patna, Bihar, has lived in Ghaziabad for the past six years, ever since his father's sudden heart attack in 2019 forced him to drop out of school and start working. His father had run a small tea stall near Patna Junction, the family's only income source, and when he died, Amit became responsible for supporting his mother and two younger brothers overnight.

The pandemic hit soon after, shrinking job opportunities and pushing the family to sell the tea stall to repay loans. Acting began to feel impossible, a luxury he couldn't afford while trying to keep his family afloat.

But Amit refused to let go completely. With just a smartphone and determination, he turned to YouTube channels and online resources, teaching himself voice modulation, scene breakdowns, and character work. He recorded himself over and over, watching his mistakes and improving.

In April 2023, that self-teaching paid off spectacularly. Amit competed in Junoon-E-Manch, a national online acting competition, against performers from across India and won third prize. "It reassured me that I wasn't on the wrong path," he says. "My talent was acknowledged."

He started performing with the Awaaz Nukkad Natak street theater group, acting in plays about social issues like environmental protection. The experience showed him that acting carries responsibility beyond entertainment.

Now Amit has been accepted into a one-year acting diploma program at The Indian School of Acting in Ghaziabad. The school offers lifetime mentorship and connections to major production houses like Dharma and Red Chillies, with alumni working in films and web series. Since it's local, he won't need accommodation costs, just the 90,000 rupee course fee (about $1,050 USD).

Why This Inspires

Amit could have rushed to Mumbai unprepared, hoping for lucky breaks. Instead, he's choosing patience and skill-building, even when it means asking for help through crowdfunding. "I don't believe in rushing without preparation," he explains. "I want to build my skills first, so when I enter the industry, I do it with confidence."

His father had creative interests too but never got to pursue them. That memory keeps Amit going when discouragement creeps in. He's determined not to let financial circumstances kill creativity the way they did for his dad.

The crowdfunding campaign isn't charity to Amit; it's a bridge between self-taught talent and professional opportunity. "It would show my family and me that we're not facing this alone," he says, "and that people believe."

Six years of mirror practice might finally lead to a stage.
