25,000 Free Books Headed to NYC Kids Thanks to ThriftBooks

A teacher started crying at a Book Fairies event when she found the exact books her school had denied her $150 to buy, now available for free.

That moment captures why ThriftBooks' donation of 25,000 books to the nonprofit matters so much. Since 2012, Book Fairies has distributed 6 million books to Title I schools and community partners across New York City and Long Island, but demand keeps growing.

Last year alone, Book Fairies came up 28,000 books short of what teachers and community leaders requested. Inadequate access to books is the number one cause of delayed childhood literacy, making donations like this crucial for closing that gap.

The partnership brings together ThriftBooks, the world's largest online retailer of used books, and Book Fairies' proven distribution network. At large-scale events, educators and community leaders can grab books that would otherwise stretch their budgets too thin.

Behind the scenes, volunteers at Book Fairies' central sorting area work with pallet jacks to move massive boxes of books. They organize donations by reading level and destination before sending them out across the boroughs.

Dan Schwartzberg from 4Media Group visited one of the free book events and witnessed the impact firsthand. He saw educators finding exactly what their students needed without having to fight budget battles or make tough choices about classroom resources.

The Ripple Effect

Barbara Hagen, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for ThriftBooks, says the partnership puts the company's mission into real action. "We're focused on saving books and sharing them, and making sure that reading is something everyone has access to," she explained.

Courtney Collins, Associate Executive Director for Book Fairies, calls the donation transformative. "That's 25,000 opportunities to provide what we otherwise would not have been able to provide," she said.

Each book represents a child who might discover a love of reading, a teacher who can create the classroom library they've envisioned, or a family building their home collection for the first time.
