Young graduates in caps and gowns celebrating at Youth Success Academy commencement ceremony

29 Youth Earn Second-Chance Diplomas in Georgia

✨ Faith Restored

Twenty-nine young people who left traditional school just proved that giving up is never the end of the story. Through Georgia's Youth Success Academy, they earned high school diplomas and a fresh start at building their futures.

Twenty-nine students who once walked away from traditional high school just walked across graduation stages with their diplomas in hand.

The Youth Success Academy at Georgia Northwestern Technical College celebrated two commencement ceremonies this month, honoring young people who refused to let setbacks define them. Seventeen students graduated at the Floyd County Campus in Rome on June 9, while twelve more received diplomas at the Walker County Campus in Rock Spring on June 11.

These weren't typical graduation ceremonies. Every graduate in the room had faced the difficult decision to leave traditional school, then made the even harder choice to come back and finish.

Dr. Angela Shuman-Smith, who teaches in the program, reminded Floyd County graduates that their achievement proves something powerful. "Your future isn't defined by where you started," she told the cap-and-gown crowd. "It's defined by the choices you make, the effort you invest and the belief that you have in yourself."

The Youth Success Academy does more than prepare students for equivalency exams. Participants receive job readiness training, attend leadership workshops and get hands-on career exploration. The program serves young people up to age 24, offering help with college expenses and enrollment for those ready to continue their education.

Hope Gold, an instructor at the Walker County campus, gave graduates three pieces of advice: be courageous even when afraid, be kind because character matters more than success, and be resilient because everyone faces disappointments.

The Ripple Effect

These 29 diplomas represent more than individual victories. They signal to other struggling students across northwest Georgia that the path to education doesn't have to be straight to reach the destination.

The program operates through partnerships with local school boards, family crisis centers and community organizations who recognize that some young people need a different route to reach their potential. Over the past year, Georgia Northwestern Technical College served more than 14,000 people through various education programs, proving that second chances work when communities invest in them.

Students from towns like Rome, LaFayette, Chickamauga and Silver Creek now hold credentials that open doors to careers and college. Some will pursue associate degrees at GNTC, which achieved a 100 percent job placement rate last year. Others will enter the workforce with both a diploma and the resilience that comes from overcoming obstacles.

Each graduate proved that quitting school doesn't have to mean quitting on your future.
