3 Rescued as Flash Flood Hits NSW Northern Rivers

When flash floods hit the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales this afternoon, emergency crews and quick-thinking neighbors ensured every person made it to safety.

A severe weather system dumped 106mm of rain in just three hours near Bangalow, catching communities across Lismore, Byron Bay, and Mullumbimby by surprise around noon. The main street of Bangalow transformed into a rushing river within minutes.

SES teams rescued two residents from homes on Deacon Street and pulled another person from a vehicle trapped in rising floodwater. While 20 cars sustained damage, no injuries were reported thanks to swift action from emergency services and alert community members.

Linda Sparrow was inside a bank near Deacon Street when someone burst through the door with an urgent warning. "Quick, you've got to move your cars now," they shouted.

Seconds later, she watched floodwater overtake an employee's vehicle as the driver tried to relocate it. "It was so quick. All of a sudden the car was being washed away, it was moving," Sparrow said.

Despite witnessing previous floods in the area, Sparrow had never seen water rise this rapidly. Her observation helped officials understand just how unexpectedly the system struck.

The Bright Side

SES deputy zone commander Kristine McDonald praised how quickly the community responded to the dangerous conditions. The rapid communication between residents and emergency services prevented what could have been a far more serious situation.

The three successful rescues highlight the effectiveness of local emergency teams who know these flood-prone areas well. Their familiarity with the region's geography and quick response times meant vulnerable residents received help exactly when they needed it most.

Weather warnings remain in place for communities surrounding Byron Bay, with officials urging residents to monitor conditions and avoid driving through floodwater. The message that saved lives today continues spreading through the Northern Rivers region.
