3,000 Trees to Honor 9/11 Lives Through National Campaign

When hundreds of volunteers gathered in New York City's Battery Park on September 9, they planted more than just a 15-foot willow oak tree. They planted a living symbol of hope that will grow for generations to come.

The tree planting launched "Together We Grow," a partnership between nonprofit 9/11 Day and One Tree Planted. Over the next year, 3,000 trees will be planted nationwide to honor the 2,977 victims of the September 11 attacks.

The first tree was planted at the Labyrinth of Contemplation, a memorial space in Battery Park. Community members worked alongside families who lost loved ones in the attacks, restoring the gathering space together. The location held special meaning as one of the first public events in the newly reopened waterfront area.

This initiative is part of 9/11 Day's larger goal to generate one million good deeds by September 11, 2024, marking 25 years since the attacks. Since 2002, the nonprofit has organized annual service projects to transform the anniversary into a day of kindness and community action. Tens of millions of Americans participate each year through volunteering and acts of service.

The Ripple Effect

Each tree planted creates lasting impact far beyond its initial planting. The trees will clean the air, provide shade, and serve as living memorials that communities can gather around for decades.

Hank Lynch, CEO of One Tree Planted, explains the deeper meaning: "A tree is a simple but powerful symbol of that remembrance. It gives us a chance to honor the past while doing something good for the future."

The campaign invites anyone to participate. People can plant memorial trees through One Tree Planted starting at just $10. Each contribution supports reforestation efforts while honoring someone lost.

Jay Winuk, who co-founded 9/11 Day after losing his brother in the attacks, sees the project as proof that remembrance can fuel positive action. "Together We Grow is a beautiful example of how service can bring people together, create connection and turn remembrance into something positive and lasting."

From a single tree in Manhattan to 3,000 across the nation, this campaign shows how communities can turn grief into growth, one tree at a time.
