39 Georgia Students Win $25K in Merit Scholarships

Thirty-nine students across southern Georgia are celebrating a financial breakthrough that will help them finish their education and launch meaningful careers.

Wiregrass Georgia Technical College Foundation awarded $25,000 in merit scholarships this semester to students pursuing everything from dental hygiene to cybersecurity. The scholarships came from local businesses, families, and community supporters who wanted to remove financial barriers standing between students and their dreams.

Students had to earn these awards. Each applicant completed a detailed application and provided letters of support, proving their commitment to their education. Winners came from 11 counties and four different campuses, plus online learners scattered throughout the region.

The scholarships cover critical expenses that often force students to drop out: tuition, fees, books, and program supplies. For students like those studying practical nursing, radiologic technology, or welding, these costs can quickly add up to thousands of dollars per semester.

Local organizations stepped up in powerful ways. Farmers & Merchants Bank, the Lions Club, and the Emile T. Fisher Foundation are just a few of the donors who made this possible. Some scholarships honor loved ones, like the Kevin Acree Memorial Scholarship and the Michelle Brown Williams Memorial Scholarship, turning grief into opportunity for the next generation.

The Ripple Effect

These 39 scholarships represent far more than financial aid. They're an investment in Georgia's future workforce and healthcare system. Every dental hygienist, nurse, and IT specialist who graduates because of donor support will go on to serve their communities for decades.

Foundation Director Mona MacKenzie summed up what makes this work so meaningful: "It's so fulfilling to assist our students on their educational journey." She credited the donor network for understanding that removing financial barriers changes lives.
