Cornell engineering professor Jefferson Tester notes that field testing will be crucial. "You've got to prove that this thing actually works for a sustainable period of production," he says. But the early results are promising enough that the U.S. government has embraced geothermal with new enthusiasm, while tidal energy projects are attracting major investment.
