4-Year-Old to Become Youngest Pianist at Carnegie Hall
Michael Girgis started playing piano just eight months ago, and now he's headed to Carnegie Hall. The four-year-old from Maryland will make history as the youngest pianist ever to perform at the legendary venue.
Most four-year-olds are still mastering their ABCs, but Michael Girgis reads musical notes better than the alphabet.
The Montgomery County, Maryland native picked up his first piano lesson in September 2025 under teacher Ms. Elena's guidance. By December, he was already performing in his first recital.
Eight months later, Michael has collected four piano competition awards and an invitation that would make any musician's heart skip a beat. He won the 2026 American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition in March, earning him two performance slots at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
He'll take the stage on May 31 and July 14, 2026, becoming the youngest pianist in the hall's history to perform there. The previous record holder, five-year-old Alec Van Khajadourian, made his debut just last July.
Michael's musical journey started much earlier than his formal lessons. At 18 months old, he watched his two sisters and older brother practice piano, waiting impatiently for his turn.

Now he practices three times a week for 30 to 45 minutes each session, using a special pedal extender so his feet can reach. His motivation is charmingly practical: "I like playing piano, nothing else. You have to work hard so you'll get more money."
But piano isn't his whole world. Michael loves swimming, roller skating, biking, and ice skating. He makes time for birthday parties with friends, and his favorite cartoon is still Peppa Pig. Blue is his favorite color, and like any four-year-old, he can't resist candies and chocolates.
Sunny's Take
His parents never imagined this moment would come so soon. "It's something we couldn't have dreamed of," his father Magdy told local news, still processing the reality of his son's achievement.
Ms. Elena saw something special from the start. "Michael is truly a rising star," she shared on Instagram in February. "His dedication, passion, and artistry shine through every time he sits at the keys."
When Michael walks onto that Carnegie Hall stage this summer, he'll prove that extraordinary talent knows no age limit.
