42 Indianapolis Schools Showcase Student Talent and Wellness

When students from 42 different Indianapolis Public Schools gathered at Northwest Middle School on May 6, they transformed an ordinary gymnasium into a festival of talent, energy, and achievement.

More than 300 parents, teachers, and community members showed up to see what students have been creating and learning all year. The Imagine Create Perform K–12 District Showcase of the Arts, Innovation & Wellness featured everything from breathtaking artwork to dancing robots.

Art galleries lined the walls while STEM demonstrations filled the center floor. Students confidently explained their robotics projects to curious visitors. Music performances echoed through the space as young artists performed pieces they'd spent months perfecting.

The physical education students brought explosive energy to the event. They performed coordinated dance routines, demonstrated DrumFIT percussion movements, and showed off impressive jump rope skills. The movement-based showcases had the whole crowd clapping along.

Health education students contributed too, displaying creative posters about wellness initiatives happening in their classrooms. Their work showed how students are learning to take care of their minds and bodies.

The Ripple Effect

This celebration represents something bigger than one good night. Kathy Langdon, who coordinates physical education and health for the district, says the event proves what's happening in IPS schools every single day.

Teachers across multiple subjects worked together to make the showcase happen. Art educators carefully curated student work like professional gallery directors. Educators from different content areas collaborated to create interactive experiences that engaged entire families.

Brynn Kardash, executive director of school supports, highlighted what made the evening special. Students discovered their passions while teachers created meaningful opportunities for them to shine. Schools that often compete worked together instead.

The showcase proved that learning doesn't just happen in textbooks. Students express themselves through art, solve problems with technology, and build confidence through performance. When schools give kids diverse ways to excel, amazing things emerge.

Families left that gymnasium having seen their children's potential in action, and students walked away knowing their community values what they create.
