42 Orange County Schools Win California's Top Honor

When State Superintendent Tony Thurmond announced this year's California Distinguished Schools winners, Orange County had plenty to celebrate.

Forty-two local middle and high schools earned the state's most prestigious public education honor in 2026. These campuses stood out among 408 statewide winners for their exceptional student achievement and commitment to helping every student succeed.

The recognition hits especially close to home because these schools didn't just focus on test scores. They prioritized closing achievement gaps for historically underserved students while maintaining high standards across the board.

"To have 42 schools in Orange County recognized at the state level speaks to the dedication of educators, students and families across our communities," said Orange County Superintendent Dr. Stefan Bean. "These campuses reflect what's possible when strong instruction, support systems and high expectations come together."

The winners span from Anaheim to Westminster, representing diverse districts and student populations. Standout schools include Oxford Academy, Troy High School, and Capistrano Valley High School, alongside middle schools like Lakeside and Rancho San Joaquin.

Schools earned recognition in three categories. Exemplary High Achievers ranked among the state's top performers while ensuring historically underserved groups kept improving. Achievement Gap Closers accelerated academic growth for multiple underserved student groups while maintaining strong overall performance.

A new category this year, Beacons of Opportunity, recognized schools in rural and Title I communities that demonstrated outstanding results across multiple student outcomes. This addition acknowledges that excellence looks different in different communities.

Why This Inspires

These awards represent more than plaques on walls. They recognize educators who stayed committed to every single student, even when challenges mounted.

The numbers tell a powerful story about what's possible. Orange County schools captured more than 10% of all state winners, demonstrating a region-wide commitment to educational excellence.

To qualify, schools had to meet rigorous standards. They tested at least 95% of students and maintained healthy indicators for attendance and school climate. These requirements ensure that recognized schools succeed in sustainable, holistic ways.

The 42 Orange County winners will celebrate together on April 24 at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim. Elementary schools were recognized last year when 44 Orange County campuses won, and they'll be eligible again in 2027.

For families in these communities, the recognition confirms what they already knew: their local schools are doing something right. For educators, it validates years of hard work, late nights, and unwavering belief in their students' potential.
