422 Independent Bookstores Opened Across America in 2025
Independent bookstores are making a stunning comeback, with 422 new shops opening in 2025 alone. After decades of decline, local bookstores are thriving by offering what Amazon can't: real human connection.
Small bookstores across America are proving that community beats convenience, and the numbers tell an inspiring story.
Between 2020 and 2025, the number of independent bookstores in the United States jumped by 70%. Last year alone, 422 new independently owned shops opened nationwide, up 31% from 2024, according to the American Booksellers Association.
The comeback seemed impossible just years ago. Amazon's dominance and big chain consolidation pushed local bookstores to an all-time low by 2009. Most experts predicted these neighborhood shops would disappear completely.
Then something unexpected happened. After the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, independent bookstores started growing again. Shop owners discovered what their communities were truly hungry for: physical spaces where people could gather, talk, and connect over shared interests.
"It is a story of resilience," Ryan Raffaelli, a Harvard Business School professor who has spent years studying the turnaround, told Fast Company. "It's a story of hope. And it's a story about the power of community."

Anderson's Bookshops in Illinois hosts 250 author events every year. Other stores run birthday parties, book clubs, story times, and multiple signings in a single weekend. These gatherings give readers something they can't find online: their tribe.
"People start finding their own tribe and they go, 'I want to be around these people,'" Raffaelli explained. Big retailers can offer lower prices by selling books at a loss, but they can't offer curated selections chosen by booksellers who actually read the books first.
The Ripple Effect
The bookstore renaissance extends beyond physical shops. Bookshop.org, an online retailer launched in 2020 to help indie stores survive the pandemic, saw sales grow by 55% in 2025. The platform has raised over $40 million for independent booksellers since its launch.
Novelist Ann Patchett opened her own bookstore, Parnassus Books, in Nashville in 2011. She sees these spaces as essential to building a society that values reading. "Books give people the means by which to connect," Patchett said in a 2026 TED Talk. "The conversations may start with books, but they go everywhere."
Customers are willing to pay full retail price when they know their purchase supports their community. For many shoppers, buying from a local bookstore isn't just a transaction. It's an investment in the places where they've found friends, discovered new authors, and felt like they belong.
"Reading shines the light that disrupts the dark isolation so many people find themselves in," Patchett said.
