429 Charlie Chaplin Fans Gather at Swiss Museum

Picture this: 429 people in black bowler hats, toothbrush mustaches, and canes gathering on a sunny Swiss lawn, all dressed as the same movie legend. That's exactly what happened Sunday at the Charlie Chaplin museum in Corsier-sur-Vevey, Switzerland.

The lookalike rally took place at Manoir de Ban, the sprawling estate where Chaplin lived for the last 25 years of his life with his wife Oona and their eight children. Fans of all ages traveled to mark the 10th anniversary of the museum's opening.

Under blazing sunshine, the crowd formed a giant number 10 on the lawn stretching before the manor. While they fell short of the 2017 world record of 662 participants, nobody seemed to mind.

"I am sincerely the happiest man alive," said Anthony Champeil, a 36-year-old French actor who often portrays Chaplin on stage. He beamed as he looked around at the sea of miniature mustaches and canes.

Champeil suggested Chaplin would have loved seeing hundreds "of big kids" gathered at his home. The filmmaker had always encouraged people to maintain a childlike sense of wonder and playfulness throughout their lives.

Alice Kauffmann brought her young children to participate as miniature Chaplins. She called the gathering "moving" and said it brought to mind the humanistic ideas Chaplin promoted through iconic films like "The Great Dictator," "The Kid," and "Modern Times."

"He defended love, respect and beautiful values," Kauffmann said. Other participants nodded in agreement, noting how Chaplin's legacy of compassion and humor continues to bring people together across generations.

There's something wonderfully pure about hundreds of people choosing to spend their Sunday dressed as a silent film star who died nearly 50 years ago. This wasn't about setting records or social media fame. It was about celebrating an artist who used laughter to promote kindness during dark times.

Sophie Teteule, 52, summed it up perfectly: "I think it is magnificent that we can gather today, so long after he left us."

Museum spokeswoman Olivia Baliguet wasn't discouraged by missing the record. "Nothing is lost," she said, already thinking about future attempts.
