4,500 Paddlers Celebrate 50 Years of Hong Kong Dragon Boats

Victoria Harbour transformed into a sea of colorful dragon boats this weekend as Hong Kong celebrated half a century of its beloved racing tradition.

More than 4,500 paddlers from 16 jurisdictions, including Australia, Qatar, and Hong Kong, competed in the two-day International Dragon Boat Races. The event marked its 50th anniversary with the biggest turnout in recent years, bringing together tourists and locals along the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade.

The anniversary atmosphere electrified both competitors and spectators. Visitors praised the "well-organized" and "really fun" celebration, while seasoned racers noticed something different about this year's competition.

"Everyone is preparing well for this race," said Francis Tang Lam Tat, 71-year-old chairman of team Hytera. "Because it's the 50th anniversary, the organizers sent invitations to dragon boat teams around the world asking them to come to Hong Kong."

Tang, whose team fielded two mixed squads that advanced to the semi-finals, described this year's races as "very competitive" compared with past editions. Local competitors attributed the heightened intensity to the sport's growing global popularity.

The anniversary celebration showcased how a traditional festival has evolved into an international sporting phenomenon. What began as a local cultural event five decades ago now attracts elite teams from across the globe, turning Hong Kong into a hub for dragon boat excellence.
