46 Students and Teachers Freed After 56 Days in Captivity

Forty-six people walked free on Friday evening after spending 56 days in captivity deep inside a Nigerian forest reserve. The group of students and teachers, taken from three schools in Oyo State on May 15, were rescued through a weeks-long operation involving multiple security agencies working together.

The kidnapping shocked Nigeria and sparked immediate action. Teachers across the country went on strike, civil society groups organized mass protests in Ibadan, and security forces from the Office of the National Security Adviser, State Security Service, Nigerian Army, and police launched coordinated rescue efforts.

Security forces used smart tactics to weaken the terrorists' position. They cut off food supplies to the forest camp where the captives were held and arrested associates who supported the kidnappers from outside. Some terrorists were killed and others arrested during the final operation.

Six suspects connected to the attack were arrested as investigators worked to understand how terrorists operating in northern Nigeria had moved southward.
