50 Years: Kitchen Worker Becomes Heart of Iowa High School
Denis Glynn started working in his high school kitchen as a special education student in 1976. Five decades later at age 71, he's still showing up every day and treating everyone like family.
Denis Glynn walked into the Bettendorf High School kitchen in January 1976 as a 21-year-old student learning job skills. Fifty years later, he's become the beloved heart of a school that has watched him transform from student to irreplaceable teammate.
Glynn was among the first students to graduate from Bettendorf High School's special education program in Iowa. When he graduated that August, he immediately joined the staff full time and never looked back.
Now 71, Glynn has served meals to generations of students while building something even more important than a decades-long career. He's created a family.
"Every time I come in, he always asks me personal questions about how everything's going, and he does that with everyone," says Michelle Riessen, the district's nutrition and wellness manager. "He treats everyone in the department like family."

Riessen calls Glynn "the glue that keeps us, that binds us together." In an era when the average American changes jobs 12 times during their career, Glynn has shown up to the same kitchen for 50 years, greeting coworkers and asking about their lives.
His consistency has made him a living landmark at Bettendorf High School. Students who ate lunch in his cafeteria decades ago now send their own children through the same line, where Glynn still works with the same warmth.
Sunny's Take
This isn't just a story about longevity. It's about what happens when someone finds their place and decides to pour everything into it. Glynn could have moved on, climbed ladders, chased promotions. Instead, he chose connection over credentials and became something more valuable than any title: the person who makes everyone feel like they belong.
The district will formally honor Glynn at its employee recognition celebration on June 4. But the real recognition happens every day when coworkers and students walk into that kitchen and know someone genuinely cares about them.
And despite reaching this remarkable milestone, Glynn has no plans to retire. After 50 years of showing up, he's not done yet.
