Johannesburg Inner-City School Tops Global Maths Contest

A school tucked behind a rainbow fence in downtown Johannesburg just became the world's top performer in a global maths competition, shattering every assumption about what inner-city students can achieve.

CityKidz Pre & Primary School, established in 2008 on Mooi Street, crowned the 2026 Matific Olympiad earlier this month. The game-based maths contest drew millions of primary school children from 20 countries, and this small Johannesburg school beat them all.

The victory required something bigger than a few star students. Principal Sharon Reynolds explains that every single learner had to log in and practice consistently, with teachers monitoring progress in class and parents keeping the momentum going at home.

That whole-school commitment reflects the culture Reynolds has built since taking charge in 2013. With small class sizes and programs in science, technology, engineering, maths, robotics and arts, the school now serves nearly 1,000 students in a neighborhood most people write off.

Teacher Nhlanhla Mgobhozi, who leads the intermediate phase, regularly watches visitors' jaws drop when they enter. "Parents walk in and say they've worked in the area for years and had no idea a school like this existed," he says.

The school sits in the heart of Johannesburg's CBD, where pavements pack with hawkers and minibus taxis edge through heavy traffic. Yet behind the security gates, teachers have created something remarkable: a place where students are so excited they need calming down when class starts.

The track record backs up the energy. Accredited by Umalusi and part of the Independent Schools Association of South Africa, CityKidz students regularly place in regional maths, science and spelling contests. High school principals across Johannesburg report that former CityKidz students consistently excel academically.

The Ripple Effect

The impact reaches beyond test scores and trophies. Cinderella Moyo, who teaches Grade 3 and heads the foundation phase, joined when just a handful of students attended. She watched the school grow exponentially over 14 years, even educating her own children before they moved to university.

The school launched an AI Robotics Centre in February 2025 and plans to open CityTeenz High School in 2027. Each expansion creates more opportunities for families who deserve excellent education right where they live, proving that zip codes don't determine destiny.

For Mgobhozi, the real rewards come in smaller moments: a learner saying thank you, a parent recognizing hard work. Those nuggets of appreciation fuel a staff working to create great experiences every single day.
