Bihar Student Wins $100K Prize After 22 College Rejections

When the Georgetown acceptance email arrived, Adarsh Kumar was sitting with his mother, the woman who cleaned homes to buy him the laptop that changed everything.

That laptop became his classroom in Champaran, Bihar, where electricity flickered and internet connections barely held. At 13, Adarsh taught himself to code on that machine and co-founded Mission Badlao, helping secure land for a government school and facilitating over 2,000 COVID vaccinations.

At 14, he left for Kota with 1,000 rupees in his pocket, chasing the standard dream of engineering coaching. When he couldn't afford the fees, he didn't go home. Instead, he camped out in libraries with free wifi, cold emailing mentors until enough responded to turn into real opportunities.

His persistence earned him a full scholarship to one of India's top international schools in Jaipur. He became their first scholarship recipient, then immediately helped three more students win the same support. That pattern of widening the door behind him became his signature move.

At 16, Adarsh launched Skillzo, a platform connecting underserved students to mentorship and scholarships. The platform has now helped over 20,000 students across India, many of whom have gone on to win their own scholarships and start ventures.

In September 2025, he won the Chegg.org Global Student Prize, a $100,000 award selected from nearly 11,000 nominations across 148 countries. He became the first Indian ever to win it, accepting the honor in London.

The Ripple Effect spreads in both directions. Despite his track record, 22 universities rejected Adarsh's applications. A nonprofit called Second Chance, which places high-potential international students after regular admissions close, asked Georgetown Qatar to review his profile as an exception. They agreed.

Now he's headed to Georgetown on a full scholarship covering tuition, housing, meals, flights, visa, health insurance and all educational costs. He carried the class banner at the New Student Convocation in Doha, representing 150 students selected from a 9.4% acceptance rate.

The $100,000 prize money is already spoken for. Adarsh is investing it into SkillzoX, an AI-powered, low-bandwidth mentorship platform designed specifically for rural connectivity, and launching an Ignite Fellowship for student changemakers.

His mother bought him a laptop when she could barely afford it, betting on a future she couldn't see but chose to believe in anyway.
