500,000 UK Kids Now Qualify for Free School Meals

Families across England are about to get some welcome relief at the kitchen table, with half a million more children now eligible for free school lunches starting in September.

The expanded program removes the existing £7,400 income cap for families on Universal Credit. Any household receiving UC can now qualify their children for free school meals, regardless of their earnings.

The government projects this expansion will lift around 100,000 children out of poverty before the current Parliament ends. It's backed by over £1 billion in funding and represents one of the largest expansions of the program in recent years.

There's just one catch. Research from the Child Poverty Action Group found that 55% of newly eligible parents don't even know their children now qualify.

The charity surveyed 201 parents in England who will become eligible under the new rules. More than half had no idea the change was coming, raising concerns that thousands of families might miss out simply because they weren't informed.

School leaders are welcoming the policy while urging the government to directly notify eligible families. Paul Whiteman from the NAHT school leaders' union called the expansion "enormously welcome" but noted that checking eligibility creates extra work for already stretched schools.

Both the Department for Work and Pensions and Department for Education have the data to identify and contact newly eligible families directly. Advocates say this would ensure children get help immediately while reducing the burden on parents and schools alike.
