62-Year-Old Braves Manager Tackles 235-Pound Brawler

When a baseball brawl erupted Tuesday night, 62-year-old manager Walt Weiss didn't freeze or yell from the sidelines. He became a human missile.

During the Braves' 7-2 victory over the Angels at Angel Stadium, Los Angeles designated hitter Jorge Soler charged the mound after taking issue with a pitch near his head. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound slugger had his sights set on Braves pitcher Reynaldo López.

That's when Weiss sprinted from the dugout like a man half his age. The veteran manager dropped his shoulder and delivered a textbook tackle that sent Soler straight to the ground.

"That's a big man, and so I just felt I've gotta get him off his feet because he's gonna hurt somebody," Weiss explained after the game. "He was on a warpath."

The tackle was so impressive that the Atlanta Falcons took notice. The NFL team posted a screenshot of the moment on social media with a simple message: "Come put on the pads, Skip."

Weiss had every reason to stay back and let his players handle the chaos. At 62, most people are thinking about retirement, not throwing their body in front of charging athletes.

But Weiss saw someone who needed protecting and didn't hesitate. His instinct to defend his pitcher overrode any thought about personal safety or looking foolish.

The tackle was especially remarkable given Weiss's relationship with Soler. The two were teammates on the Braves' 2021 World Series championship team, where Weiss served as an assistant coach and Soler earned World Series MVP honors. "I love Soler," Weiss said, showing that even friendship doesn't change his duty to his current team.
