64-Year-Old Dad Graduates Nursing School Alongside His Son

John Adesoye walked across the graduation stage at the University of West England this year, nursing degree in hand, proving it's never too late to chase a new dream.

The 64-year-old father of five from Bristol completed a challenging four-year journey that included a two-year nurse associate program and a two-year apprenticeship at North Bristol NHS Foundation Trust. For one day each week during his studies, he attended classes on the same campus where his son Daniel was pursuing a degree in creative music technology.

Growing up in a poor farming family in Nigeria, John never imagined university would be part of his story. As a child, he was fascinated by how things worked, especially his family's radio, which sparked a lifelong love of learning. That curiosity eventually led him to work as an electronics technician in Greece before moving to the UK.

"I didn't think I'd ever go to university, to be honest," John said. "When I got the chance to go to university, I didn't take it for granted. I followed it with my heart."

His younger classmates gave him an unexpected gift during his training. Being surrounded by students decades younger made him feel youthful again, energizing him through the demanding coursework and clinical rotations.

He switched careers entirely in his sixties, learning a completely new field while balancing family responsibilities. Now he works as a nurse at Southmead Hospital, the same place where he completed his apprenticeship. He's caring for patients and living proof that reinvention has no expiration date.

His advice for anyone doubting their own potential? "Don't listen to people who say you're too old for university. If I can do it, others can too. People are more brilliant than they think and they're stronger than they think."
