Nearly 69,000 students in Karnataka, India just proved that second chances can change everything.
The Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board released results for their SSLC Exam-2 on Saturday, giving students who struggled in their first attempt another opportunity to pass. Out of 11,854 students who took the makeup exams, 68,802 qualified, pushing the state's overall 2026 pass rate to an impressive 93.13%.
The second round of exams ran from May 18 to 25 across 358 testing centers throughout the state. Students could check their scores online, through a mobile app, or even on DigiLocker, making results accessible no matter where they were.
What makes this outcome even more remarkable is how many students actually improved their scores. Out of all the retake students, 8,393 candidates boosted their marks, representing over 70% of participants.
Five students achieved perfect scores of 625 out of 625 on the makeup exam. One came from a government school and four from private institutions, joining the seven students who had already scored perfectly in the first round.

Regular students showed strong performance across both exams. Those who took the first exam had a 94.10% pass rate, while fresh students in the second exam achieved 63%, combining for a consolidated pass rate of 98%. That's a massive jump from last year's 80.04%.
Boys slightly edged out girls in the second exam, with a 63.29% pass rate compared to 62.35% for female students. Combined with the first exam's 760,002 successful students, the total number of qualifying students reached 818,956.
The Ripple Effect
The makeup exam system did exactly what it was designed to do: keep students in school. A total of 603 students who initially didn't pass now get to continue their education instead of facing dead ends. For these students and their families, this second opportunity represents more than just exam scores.
It's a chance at futures that might have otherwise slipped away. These students can now move forward with their peers, pursuing higher education and the opportunities that come with it. The Karnataka board has created a safety net that catches students before they fall through the cracks.
This approach shows what's possible when education systems prioritize student success over rigid one-shot testing. Second chances aren't about lowering standards; they're about recognizing that young people develop at different paces and deserve multiple pathways to demonstrate their knowledge.
For 603 families in Karnataka, this week brought relief, celebration, and renewed hope for what comes next.
