The differences were so significant that the team created an entirely new family, genus, and species to classify it.

They named it Mobydickia poseidonii, honoring both the sperm whale that caught it (famous from Moby-Dick) and the Greek sea god Poseidon, whose trident matches the squid's distinctive hooks. The scientific description appeared in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society in July 2025.
Creating a new family is a big deal in taxonomy. It means this squid represents a completely separate structural lineage among ocean squid, not just a slight variation of something already known. The last time scientists erected a new oceanic squid family was 1998, when they described bigfin squid.
