72-Year-Old Runs 125 Marathons After Retiring as Teacher

Most people mark retirement with a quiet weekend at home. Christine Hobson ran 26.2 miles through the streets of London instead.

The former headteacher from Yorkshire finished her last day of work on a Friday. By Sunday, she was crossing the finish line of the London Marathon at age 60.

"I thought that was going to be my one and only marathon," Hobson, now 72, told reporters. But during her second race in Chester, she spotted another runner wearing a "100 Marathon" t-shirt and found her calling.

Twelve years later, Hobson has completed 125 marathons spanning every continent on Earth. Her races have taken her from the streets of Marrakech and Singapore to the frozen expanse of Antarctica, where she set a world record in 2022 as the oldest woman to complete the Antarctic Ice Marathon in temperatures dropping to minus 50 degrees Celsius.

The journey hasn't been smooth. An injury sidelined her for two years, and she thought her running days were over. "But this weekend I completed my hundred and twenty-fifth marathon," she shared on Instagram.

Why This Inspires

Hobson's message goes beyond marathon medals. In viral videos, she demonstrates strength training by lifting everyday items like plates and laundry baskets. "The gym just helps me do it better," she explains. "I'm training so life stays easy."

She warns that inactivity, not aging, stops people from moving. "They call sitting the new smoking," she says. At 72, running and lifting give her freedom, not just fitness.

Hobson has completed seven marathons in seven consecutive days twice. She's run through Buenos Aires, Tel Aviv, and Niagara Falls, proving that retirement isn't about slowing down.

It's about choosing your own starting line.
