74-Year-Old Rescued from Nelson Gully After Hours Missing

When a 74-year-old woman didn't return from her regular afternoon walk to her Nelson retirement village, emergency services launched a race against darkness and dropping temperatures that would save her life.

Police received the alert around nightfall on Wednesday and immediately began checking the area while calling in specialist backup. A police search and rescue dog team traveled from Blenheim, over 60 miles away, to join local Land Search and Rescue Nelson volunteers in the urgent hunt.

The teams focused their efforts on a steep gully filled with grass and native bush just above the retirement village. The challenging terrain made searching difficult, but rescuers pressed on as concerns grew about the elderly woman's exposure to cold conditions.

Searchers found her around 8:30pm near the edge of the bush in difficult terrain. While she hadn't suffered serious injuries from the fall or exposure, she was showing early signs of hypothermia after spending several hours in the cold.

Volunteers carefully carried her out of the gully on a stretcher before Hato Hone St John staff transported her to the hospital for evaluation. She has since been discharged and is now recovering at home with support from retirement village staff and her family.

Detective Jonathan Evans highlighted how cold weather and approaching darkness had created serious concerns for the woman's wellbeing. The successful outcome depended entirely on multiple organizations dropping everything to work together seamlessly.

"Their professionalism, expertise, commitment, and readiness to respond played a significant role in ensuring the woman's safety, and ultimately saving her life," Evans said. The rescue demonstrated what's possible when emergency services and community volunteers unite with a common purpose.
