74-Year-Old Runs Zero-Waste Home, Zero Electric Bill
After heart surgery at 17, Janak Palta McGilligan promised to protect the planet. Today, her windmill-powered home near Indore produces zero waste and inspires thousands to live sustainably.
A near-death experience changed everything for Janak Palta McGilligan. At 17, she underwent open heart surgery and walked away with a new mission: dedicate her life to protecting the earth.
Fast forward to today, and the 74-year-old Padma Shri recipient has turned that promise into something remarkable. Her home in Sanawadia village near Indore runs entirely on wind power, generates zero waste, and hasn't seen an electricity bill in years.
The transformation began in 2011 after her husband Jimmy passed away. Janak moved to their village home and got to work making it completely sustainable.
A windmill now powers her house and 50 neighboring homes. Her garden bursts with 160 trees and produces organic vegetables, pulses, rice, and spices across 13 different crops. She cooks everything using solar ovens.
On cloudy days, Janak doesn't miss a beat. She transforms old newspapers into fuel bricks that power her kitchen when the sun hides.

But she hasn't kept these solutions to herself. Through the Jimmy McGilligan Centre for Sustainable Development, Janak has trained over 150,000 young people and 6,000 rural and tribal women from more than 1,000 villages in solar cooking and zero-waste living.
Why This Inspires
What makes Janak's story so powerful isn't just the windmill or the solar cookers. It's that she welcomed a health crisis as a wake-up call rather than a setback.
She could have lived comfortably after attending the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, nodding along to environmental problems. Instead, she rolled up her sleeves and built real solutions in her own backyard.
Known lovingly as "Janak didi" (sister), she opens her home to visitors eager to learn sustainable living tips. Every guest leaves with practical knowledge they can apply immediately.
Her work earned India's prestigious Padma Shri award in 2015. But the real reward might be the ripple effect: thousands of families cooking with the sun, villages powered by wind, and a generation learning that living well doesn't have to cost the earth.
At 74, Janak proves that one person's promise to the planet can light up entire communities.
