80 Jakarta Firefighters Save 53 From Apartment Blaze

Eighty firefighters worked together on Sunday evening to rescue 53 people trapped inside a burning apartment building in North Jakarta, and everyone made it out alive.

The fire started from an electrical short circuit on the eighth floor of Teluk Intan Apartment in Penjaringan around 6:45 p.m. Flames quickly spread to five different floors, engulfing the fifth, sixth, seventh, ninth, and tenth levels.

Apartment management staff tried to fight the fire with portable extinguishers, but the blaze was too powerful. Residents called for help, and the fire department responded with 16 trucks and a full team of 80 trained firefighters.

The firefighters arrived quickly and immediately launched a dual mission: battling the flames while evacuating everyone inside. Among those rescued were 21 men, 24 women, seven children, and one elderly person.

Operations chief Gatot Sulaeman reported that crews brought the fire under control by 8:38 p.m., less than two hours after arriving. The building sustained an estimated 1.5 billion rupiah in damage, but no one was hurt.

While the property damage was significant, the outcome could have been devastating. Instead, it became a testament to preparation, speed, and teamwork.

The quick response from residents who called for help early made a crucial difference. So did the firefighters' ability to deploy significant resources fast, arriving with enough personnel and equipment to tackle both firefighting and rescue operations simultaneously.
