82-Year-Old Climbs 5 Million Stairs for World Record

On his 82nd birthday, Barry Frambes reached the top of a staircase he's been climbing for 16 years and hit a number most people can't imagine: 5 million stairs.

Frambes has been climbing the stairs at Northside Church of Christ in Bonham, Texas, since 2010. What started as simple exercise after retirement turned into a pursuit of the Guinness World Record for most stairs climbed.

The current record holder, Brian Davis from the United Kingdom, has logged just over 2.1 million steps. Frambes just shattered that by more than double.

He tracks every climb with tally marks on a chalkboard. Most mornings, he starts his day with 100 flights of stairs before most people finish their coffee.

The journey wasn't smooth. Frambes suffered a broken hip somewhere along the way, forcing him to start nearly from scratch. "If you give in to pain, you never get anything done," he said. "It's a lot better to work through the pain, continue, and it's the only way you can get better."

He hit his first major milestone in 2012 with 500,000 steps. On his 75th birthday, he celebrated by climbing 75 flights to reach 2 million total.

Now at 5 million, he plans to officially apply for the Guinness World Record.

Why This Inspires

Frambes could have spent retirement taking it easy. Instead, he chose to push his limits every single day, proving that age is just a number when you have determination.

His dedication shows what's possible when we refuse to let obstacles define us. A broken hip became just another challenge to overcome, not a reason to quit.

But for Frambes, the record isn't really the point. His birthday wish reveals what drives him: "To make a difference in the world. To be able to leave the world better than I found it in some way."

He credits his faith for giving him strength and hopes his example impacts others who need encouragement to keep going.

The ceiling hasn't opened up yet, but Barry Frambes keeps climbing anyway.
