85-Year-Old Singer Brings Dallas Seniors to Tears

The karaoke list at The Reserve at North Dallas was so long that hot July Sunday, organizers had to extend the event. But when 85-year-old Carole Wade started singing Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide," everything changed.

The room went silent. Eyes filled with tears. The lyrics about time, change, and growing older hit differently coming from a woman who'd lived every word.

Wade has been singing nearly her whole life. She started as a backup vocalist for Elvis impersonator groups in Dallas, then spent decades playing Deep Ellum clubs and local hotels with various bands.

Her most recent group, Psychedelic Oatmeal, formed when she met younger musicians at a jam session. Together they covered Stevie Nicks, Janis Joplin, and Led Zeppelin through her 70s.

Wade even handled the high notes in "Whole Lotta Love" that the men in her band couldn't reach. The group threw Ziploc bags of oatmeal and glitter to audiences until a club owner noticed it was mixing with spilled drinks and creating goo.

Now at The Reserve, Wade still makes music her therapy. "If you're down on a certain day, it will bring you up," she says.

Michael Hatcher, the facility's Resident Services Director, sees this transformation daily. Music reconnects seniors to their purest selves, even when memories fade.

"They remember the music, and the time," Hatcher explains. "It can be used to bring someone out of the deepest sun-downing and back to life."

Research backs this up. Music therapy coordinator Tammy Reiver notes that music increases dopamine levels, decreases depression symptoms, and improves quality of life for aging adults.

Why This Inspires

Wade's performance reminds us that passion doesn't retire. Her decades of dedication to music created something beyond entertainment: a lifeline to joy, connection, and identity that only strengthens with time.

At the karaoke event, a man leaned over to a teary-eyed witness and whispered advice worth remembering: "Never stop feeling the music."

Wade and her fellow musicians at The Reserve are already planning their next band, proving that the best performances might still be ahead.
