89 Georgia Students Honored for Academic Excellence
South Georgia State College celebrated nearly 90 students across two campuses for outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and community involvement. The recognition ceremony included both faculty-selected academic awards and student-voted honors.
South Georgia State College just wrapped up one of its biggest celebrations of student success, honoring 89 students who proved that hard work and dedication still pay off.
The college held ceremonies at both its Waycross and Douglas campuses in early April, recognizing 63 students for academic excellence and 26 recipients of Student Choice Awards. Vice President Sara Selby announced the honorees, celebrating achievements that ranged from perfect GPAs to exceptional leadership.
Students earned recognition across every academic discipline. Meaveen McKeon from Bristol took home both the Excellence in Natural Science Award and the Most Creative Student honor at the Waycross campus. Isabella Carter from Hazlehurst claimed the prestigious Kit Carson Education Award at the Douglas campus alongside her Senior Academic Achievement recognition.
The awards spanned nursing, mathematics, business, theater, and humanities. Special honors included the Charlayne Woodard Pretty Fire Award for Excellence in Theatre, the Libba Burch Award for Excellence in Nursing, and the Dr. Jim Cottingham Leadership Award.
What made the ceremony extra special? Students got to honor the people who helped them succeed. Through Student Choice Awards, they recognized faculty members, staff, campus police officers, and even their favorite campus traditions.

Why This Inspires
Both campuses agreed on one thing: Waffle Wednesday earned the title of Best Campus Experience. Sometimes the simplest gestures create the strongest community bonds.
The variety of awards tells a deeper story about what success really means. Academic excellence matters, but so does reliability, creativity, involvement, and helping others. These students didn't just ace their exams. They showed up for their classmates, contributed to campus life, and built relationships with faculty and staff who believed in them.
Students also recognized Baptist Campus Ministry at Waycross and Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Douglas as best campus clubs, highlighting how peer support networks play a crucial role in academic success.
The celebration proves that community colleges remain vital pathways for students across rural Georgia towns like Blackshear, Alma, Pearson, and Broxton. These aren't just degree mills. They're places where students get noticed, celebrated, and supported as individuals.
Sixty-three students walked away with tangible proof that their efforts mattered, and 26 faculty and staff members received validation that their dedication to students doesn't go unnoticed.
