New York School Wins Excellence Award for Student Athletes

When a high school's athletes succeed in the classroom as much as on the field, everyone wins.

Palmyra-Macedon High School in Wayne County, New York, just earned School of Excellence recognition from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. The Red Raiders achieved something remarkable: 75% of their varsity teams qualified as Scholar-Athlete Teams, proving their student-athletes take studying as seriously as practice.

The bar isn't low either. Individual students need at least a 90 GPA to qualify, and teams must have at least 75% of their roster hitting that mark.

This spring, all seven Red Raider varsity teams earned scholar-athlete recognition. That means basketball players, soccer stars, and track athletes all maintained A-minus averages or better while competing at the varsity level.

Athletic Director Chris Corey praised the achievement as a team effort. "It is an honor to be part of a school where the student-athletes value academics and our school community helps them become the best version of themselves, on and off the field," he said.

This recognition shows what's possible when schools refuse to choose between athletic excellence and academic achievement. The message to students is clear: you don't have to pick between your passions and your future.

Behind every successful student-athlete stands a network of support including coaches who prioritize study time, families who emphasize education, and teammates who hold each other accountable. The Pal-Mac community created an environment where getting good grades is just as celebrated as winning games.

These habits will serve students long after their final buzzer sounds. Time management, discipline, and balancing competing priorities are life skills that translate directly to college and careers.
