9 Nations Join Forces for 100 GW of North Sea Wind Power

The North Sea is about to become home to one of the world's largest clean energy collaborations, and it could change how Europe powers itself for generations.

Nine countries including the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands will sign an agreement next week in Hamburg to jointly develop 100 gigawatts of offshore wind power by 2050. That's enough electricity to power roughly 100 million homes while slashing carbon emissions.

Energy ministers are pledging to work together on shared clean energy projects and protect critical infrastructure from threats. The draft agreement emphasizes the need for "a high level of physical and digital protection" of energy infrastructure, with countries committing to share security data and counter threats together.

The collaboration represents a third of the North Sea region's total 300 gigawatt offshore wind goal for 2050. Transmission system operators will launch about 20 gigawatts worth of these joint projects in the 2030s, giving the initiative momentum well before mid-century.

NATO, the European Commission, and Iceland will also participate in the Hamburg meeting, strengthening the security and cooperation aspects of the plan.
