90-Year-Old Cycles China for 30 Years After Family Loss

At 90 years old, Zhang Zhongyi has spent nearly three decades cycling across China, finding beauty and purpose after unimaginable tragedy reshaped his entire world.

Zhang, from Kaifeng in Henan province, lost his son, daughter-in-law, and eight-year-old grandson in a car crash during the 1990s. His wife, devastated by grief, died of illness the following year.

Within two years, his entire family was gone. Rather than retreat into despair, Zhang made a choice that would define the next 30 years of his life.

He left home and took to the road on a bicycle. Over time, he upgraded to a tricycle and began a journey that would carry him across China's most stunning landscapes.
