90-Year-Old Gets Blind Rescue Dog as Perfect Lap Companion

Donna James had a simple wish at 90 years old: a lap dog to keep her company. Meanwhile, in a Missouri rescue shelter, a blind Chihuahua named Mocha searched for something too: a warm lap to call home.

Donna's daughter reached out to Pawportunities, a foster-based rescue in Blue Springs, Missouri. Executive Director Carrie Siems immediately knew she had the perfect match.

"It was just a routine coordinating of fosters coming in on a large transport, and when they reached out about a different dog and explained what they were looking for, I knew Mocha would be perfect," Siems told Upworthy.

The moment Donna and Mocha met turned into something magical. Donna sat in her wheelchair and gently held the tiny dog on her lap, and the bond formed instantly.

Mocha wasn't born blind but lost her eyesight suddenly one day. Since then, she craved constant physical contact and comfort.

As both Donna and her husband tenderly petted their new companion, Mocha began to doze off in their arms. The family had a cat already, but Donna knew exactly what she needed: "I just would like to have a lap dog."

Siems explained that people often misunderstand what makes a lap dog. "People think a small dog will automatically become a lap dog, when each dog has a personality that's uniquely theirs," she said.

But Mocha's gentle, cuddly nature matched Donna's needs perfectly. A blind dog who wanted nothing more than to be held found a loving woman who wanted nothing more than to hold her.

"I think this particular family is really special with it being a multigenerational household that's so loving and supportive of each other," Siems said. Sometimes the best rescues go both ways.
