Kent Goat Sanctuary Doubles Capacity With New 17-Acre Land

A goat sanctuary in Kent, England just made its biggest expansion in history, securing a future for dozens more rescued goats who need a safe home.

Buttercups Sanctuary for Goats in Boughton Monchelsea purchased 16.9 acres of land adjacent to their current property. The expansion will allow them to house up to 160 goats, doubling their current rescue capacity.

"It's been something we've all been dreaming of for a long, long time, and we're all very excited to get going," said Matt Huggins from the sanctuary. He called it the most significant step since the charity's foundation.

The newly acquired land was previously used for agriculture and sits close to the sanctuary's existing location. While it offers a blank canvas for their vision, the team knows significant work lies ahead before the first goats can call it home.

The sanctuary expects to welcome new residents to the expanded property by spring 2027. Between now and then, they'll transform the raw land into a safe haven for goats who have been abandoned, neglected, or can no longer be cared for by their owners.

The Ripple Effect

The expansion goes beyond just housing more animals. Buttercups has ambitious plans to make their new land environmentally sustainable and wildlife friendly.

Their long-term vision includes installing solar panels and wind turbines to power operations cleanly. They also plan to create habitat networks that will benefit local wildlife, turning the property into a thriving ecosystem for multiple species.

Huggins acknowledged these dreams will take years to fully realize. "There's a long road ahead, and we are going to need the help of our supporters to make it a final reality, but we've taken the first major step," he said.

The sanctuary's work protects both the goats they rescue and the beautiful Kent countryside surrounding them. By doubling their capacity, they're ensuring that more goats in crisis have somewhere safe to land.

Spring 2027 can't come soon enough for the goats waiting for their forever home.
