9/11 Survivor Found Faith in Darkness, Now Fights Trafficking

When the South Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed around him on September 11, 2001, Sujo John thought he was living his last moments on Earth.

John had been working on the 81st floor of the North Tower when the first plane struck mere feet from his desk. He escaped to the concourse below, only to be buried in dust and debris when the South Tower fell. In the darkness, he cried out to Jesus and prayed alongside strangers who thought they were about to die.

Remarkably, John survived. So did his pregnant wife, who worked in the South Tower but was running late that morning.

An FBI agent helped lead John to safety through the chaos and rubble. That agent, whose name John later learned, didn't make it out. He gave his life helping others escape.

The experience shattered and rebuilt John in equal measure. He had faced death and found something stronger than fear.

Why This Inspires

Twenty-five years after that terrible day, John has turned his survival into purpose. He founded You Can Free Us, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting human trafficking around the world.

The organization rescues women and children trapped in modern slavery and helps them rebuild their lives through rehabilitation programs. John says his 9/11 experience taught him that every moment matters and every life is worth saving.

His pregnant wife's miraculous escape that morning, simply because she was running late, reinforced his belief that life can turn on the smallest moments. Their family became living proof that hope survives even the darkest days.

John now travels sharing his story, reminding audiences that survival isn't just about making it through trauma. It's about what you do with the life you've been given afterward.
