955 Volunteers Remove 5,000 Pounds of Beach Trash in One Day

When 955 volunteers showed up to clean Santa Barbara County beaches on September 19, they didn't just pick up trash. They proved that ordinary people taking small actions can create massive change for our oceans.

The numbers tell an incredible story. Across 73 miles of coastline, volunteers removed 5,041 pounds of litter from 37 cleanup sites. The Painted Cave site alone yielded 1,500 pounds of trash and recyclables.

Cigarette butts, food wrappers, and plastic pieces topped the list of items found. But volunteers also discovered some surprising objects: a machete, a rocking chair, 80 pounds of copper wire, and even a $10 bill that probably made someone's day a little brighter.

Veronica Lee, Coastal Cleanup Day Coordinator for Explore Ecology, thanked the Site Captains and volunteers who made it happen. "We are so impressed by how our community came together to protect the ocean and our local watersheds today," she said.

The event was organized by Explore Ecology and the County of Santa Barbara Resource Recovery and Waste Management Division. Local youth leaders stepped up as Site Captains, guiding cleanup efforts and showing that environmental stewardship spans generations.

The Ripple Effect

This cleanup represents far more than one day of action. Every cigarette butt removed means one less toxic item leaching chemicals into the water. Every plastic wrapper collected is one less piece that could harm marine life or break down into microplastics.

When communities mobilize like this, they create momentum that lasts beyond the event itself. Volunteers often go home more aware of their daily choices and more connected to their local environment. Kids who participated will remember the experience and likely think twice before littering.
