Activist Cycles 650km to Raise $50K for Child Hunger Fight

🦸 Hero Alert

Mark Heywood is mountain biking 650 kilometers across South Africa to raise one million rand ($50,000 USD) to fight child hunger. The seven-day ride passes through regions where dozens of children died from malnutrition in 2025.

Mark Heywood trains just once a week, but he's tackling a grueling 650-kilometer mountain bike race anyway because he believes one person can make a difference in fighting child hunger.

Starting September 11, the co-founder of Union Against Hunger will pedal seven days through South Africa's Free State and KwaZulu-Natal provinces on the Go2Sea race. His goal is to raise one million rand (about $50,000 USD) to help feed hungry children.

The route tells a heartbreaking story. In the districts Heywood will cross, severe malnutrition killed 53 children under five in 2025 alone. In eThekwini, his final destination, 561 children suffered from dangerous malnutrition last year.

Heywood dedicated the ride to journalist Estelle Ellis, who died before they could finish writing a book together about ending hunger in South Africa. Ellis's reporting once sparked a campaign that raised over two million rand for food distribution in the Eastern Cape.

"People are looking for something to do to remember Estelle and take her passion forward," Heywood told Daily Maverick. "We will make sure that whatever money is raised, we step up and end hunger within the next years."

The activist switched from marathon running to mountain biking to stay mentally healthy while working on difficult social justice cases. He admits he's not the fastest rider and expects to take six to eight hours each day to complete the stages that professional racers finish in just a few.

The Ripple Effect

Heywood's ride shines a light on South Africa's hidden hunger crisis. In the Free State, 32% of children under five show stunted growth from chronic malnutrition. In KwaZulu-Natal, more than a quarter of young children are stunted.

President Cyril Ramaphosa committed to ending stunting by 2030, but Heywood worries it could remain just words on paper without action and data. Many districts along his route don't even collect malnutrition statistics.

The Go2Sea race itself helps communities by paying local schools to host riders each evening, with surplus funds supporting the schools. Heywood wants to prove that sporting events can drive both tourism and social change.

Every pedal stroke carries the weight of children's lives that could be saved with proper nutrition and the memory of a journalist who refused to let their stories go untold.
