Actor's Son Beats Kidney Cancer After 5-Year Battle

When Emraan Hashmi took his three-year-old son Ayaan out for pizza in January 2014, he had no idea their lives were about to change forever. Within 12 hours of Ayaan asking to use the bathroom during brunch, the Bollywood actor was sitting in a doctor's office hearing the words no parent wants to hear: your son has cancer.

Ayaan had blood in his urine, the first and only symptom before his diagnosis. Doctors told the family he needed emergency surgery the next day, followed by months of chemotherapy.

The diagnosis was Wilms tumor, a rare kidney cancer that primarily affects young children. Emraan described the moment as hitting a wall after years of building his career and family life.

The hardest part wasn't just the diagnosis itself. For Emraan and his wife, it was maintaining strength in front of their son when all they wanted to do was break down.

"We went into another room to cry because we didn't want Ayaan to see us," Emraan recalled in an interview with The Ranveer Show. "We had to give him a sense of confidence that everything would be okay."

The first six months involved intensive treatment with surgery and chemotherapy. But even after the main treatment ended, the family faced five more years of uncertainty with tests every three months to check for recurrence.

Emraan threw himself into research, learning so much about cancer that doctors were surprised by his knowledge. He eventually co-authored a book called "The Kiss of Life: How a Superhero and My Son Defeated Cancer" to help other families facing similar battles.
