"Mum sacrificed a good 15 years for me to live out my dream of playing AFL footy," Rioli Jr tells the ABC. "It's my time to give back to these kids and spend quality time with my mum."
His father was a legend on the islands as a player, coach, and mentor. Now his son carries that legacy forward, wearing brown tape on his wrist with "DAD" written across it.
Rioli's AFL career sparkled with 151 goals across 109 games. He was instrumental in West Coast's 2018 grand final victory, making crucial tackles in the final minutes to secure the premiership.
His journey wasn't without challenges. A cannabis possession charge in 2021 and his father's sudden death tested him deeply, and he nearly quit football entirely.
But those struggles gave him purpose. "I look at the drop in Indigenous players in the competition; that gives me the motivation to help the next generation do better," he said in 2025.
