750 Men Declare Violence-Free Zone in Chicago Neighborhood
A Chicago pastor united 750 men on the South Side to reclaim a neighborhood once labeled the city's most dangerous block. They declared the area surrounding a new community center a 100% violence-free zone where kids can finally feel safe.
Pastor Corey B. Brooks stood with 750 men on Chicago's South Side Sunday and made a powerful promise: this neighborhood is now a place where children can play without fear.
The 1000 Men Unity Gathering brought together fathers, pastors, former gang members, business leaders and activists outside the nearly completed Robert R. McCormick Leadership & Economic Opportunity Center. Together, they declared the surrounding area a violence-free zone.
"This is bigger than a building," Brooks said. "This is about creating a culture where men stand together to protect families, mentor young people, reduce violence, and build something that will outlive us."
The timing couldn't be more meaningful. In 2014, the Chicago Sun-Times identified this very block as the most dangerous neighborhood in all of Chicago. Now, through years of community investment and outreach, the area no longer ranks among the city's 35 most dangerous blocks.

Brooks founded Project H.O.O.D. (Helping Others Obtain Destiny) to tackle violence and poverty through mentorship, faith, workforce training and economic development. The new center will offer job training, education programs, entrepreneurship resources and safe spaces for young people.
The gathering included an early tour of the facility, giving attendees a glimpse of how the center will serve future generations. Community members committed to maintaining peace so kids can access programs without worrying about their safety.
The Ripple Effect
Brooks believes this model can inspire change far beyond Chicago's South Side. He sees the center as proof that communities don't need to wait for government solutions to transform their neighborhoods.
"If we don't wait on government and take responsibility for ourselves, we can change the trajectory of these neighborhoods and urban centers," Brooks said. The gathering showed what happens when men from all walks of life unite around a common purpose: protecting the next generation.
What started as one of Chicago's most dangerous blocks is becoming a beacon of hope, one committed community member at a time.
