Police Rescue Newborn Baby Stolen from Nigerian Hospital

A newborn baby is back with his family after police in Benue State, Nigeria rescued him from suspected child traffickers who stole him from a hospital ward. Multiple suspects are now in custody following the Tuesday incident at a healthcare facility in Gboko.

The frightening ordeal began just hours after the baby was born. When the newborn didn't cry immediately after delivery, nurses moved mother and child to a ward for closer monitoring.

Shortly after, a woman disguised as a hospital nurse approached the new mother and asked to examine the baby again. Believing she was part of the medical team, the mother handed over her son.

The suspect told the baby's grandmother, who was also present, to step back and assured her everything was fine. She then walked toward the labor room with the infant and vanished.

When the family realized something was wrong and alerted actual hospital staff, the nurses confirmed the woman was not part of their team. The discovery sparked immediate panic as family members and concerned community members rushed to the hospital.

Police spokesperson Peter Aondongu confirmed the happy ending in a Thursday interview. "I can confirm to you that some suspects have been arrested in connection with the theft of a newborn baby in Gboko," he said.

Some suspects were transferred to state headquarters in Makurdi while others remain in custody at the Gboko division. Security forces had been deployed to the hospital during the search to maintain order as tensions ran high.
