Memorial Shade Shelter Saves Stranded Colorado Biker

When a mountain biker's ride broke down in 105-degree heat on Colorado's Palisade Plunge Trail this August, a memorial built from tragedy became their lifeline.

The cyclist was stranded 10 miles from the trail's end when their bike suffered a mechanical failure. Mesa County Search and Rescue crews found them waiting at a shade shelter on the 32-mile trail in western Colorado.

That shelter wasn't just any rest stop. It was built last November to honor Jeff Higgins, a 52-year-old cyclist who died on the same trail in June 2022 from heat exposure and dehydration.

Higgins had also experienced a mechanical failure during his ride. Three other cyclists found him unconscious beside the trail and called for help, but they had run out of water themselves. Despite their efforts, Higgins didn't survive.

His family and friends raised funds to build the shade structure in partnership with the Town of Palisade, the Bureau of Land Management, and local mountain biking organizations. They wanted to prevent another tragedy.

Less than a year later, their vision became reality. The stranded biker sheltered from the brutal heat while waiting for rescue crews, who provided water before safely escorting them downhill.

The Ripple Effect

Dan Higgins, Jeff's brother, told CBS Colorado the news brought comfort to the family. "We're thankful knowing the structure built in Jeff's honor has now helped a rider. That's what it was meant to do."

Jeff's widow Amy shared similar feelings on Facebook. "Our goal has always been to encourage riders to do what they love and return home safely to their families at the end," she wrote. "I am so thankful the shade structure helped."

Mesa County Search and Rescue expressed gratitude that the mission ended safely. They noted their hearts remain with Jeff's family, hoping it brings them comfort knowing his memory is helping others along the trail.

One family's heartbreak has become a beacon of safety for every rider who follows.
