Africa Trains New Generation of Biosecurity Leaders

When Ebola struck Ituri province in May 2026, three crucial weeks passed before labs could confirm what was killing people. In those 21 days, the virus claimed 80 lives and spread to Uganda's capital, revealing a painful truth: Africa needed more trained biosecurity experts on the ground.

The good news is that gap is closing. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention launched a groundbreaking Biosafety and Biosecurity Initiative in 2019, and it's now creating a pipeline of local leaders who can respond to health threats before they spiral into regional crises.

The training program marks a fundamental shift from importing expertise to growing it at home. African scientists are learning to manage everything from natural disease outbreaks to laboratory safety protocols, building the kind of rapid response capacity that saves lives in the critical first days of an outbreak.

The initiative grew from hard lessons learned during the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, which killed more than 11,000 people and exposed how underinvestment in health security infrastructure costs lives. That tragedy sparked the creation of the Africa CDC in 2017, designed specifically to help the continent prevent, detect and respond to health emergencies.

Support from Global Affairs Canada has helped turn ambitious plans into practical action. The focus is on building sustainable, continent-wide capacity rather than relying on external responders who may arrive too late.
