India's DNA Test Screens for 7,442 Diseases from a Cheek Swab

Imagine preventing diseases you don't even know you're at risk for—all from a simple cheek swab at home.

That's exactly what SugarStrings is making possible in India. The Bengaluru-based startup launched in 2023 with a mission to help people understand their genetic health risks before serious conditions develop.

Founders Tony Jose and Rajasekhara Reddy Ravuri spent years in genomics research before a key insight changed everything. Genetic disorders might seem rare individually, but together they affect far more people than most realize.

Their solution is HealthString, a DNA test that screens for 7,442 genetic disorders from a single cheek swab. That's nearly four times more conditions than competitors like Nucleus Genomics, which screens for about 2,100 disorders.

The test looks for everything from 188 hereditary cancers to 302 cardiovascular diseases. More importantly, it identifies the exact genetic mutations causing potential problems, not just general likelihood.

"We don't just provide the likelihood of developing a disease," Jose explains. "We find the exact mutation and create a detailed report so doctors can take clinical action."

The cheek swab approach removes a major barrier to genetic testing. No needles, no blood draws, no lab visits required. People can collect samples themselves at home, making preventive healthcare feel less intimidating and more accessible.

The technology has gotten dramatically cheaper too. DNA sequencing costs have dropped to about one-third of what they were five years ago, bringing the test down to Rs 58,000 (roughly $700).

The Ripple Effect

SugarStrings is already partnering with major hospitals including Narayana Health, Manipal Hospital, and Aster Medcity. These collaborations are shifting healthcare from reactive treatment to proactive prevention.

Dr. Nalanda Jayadev at Aster Medcity believes this represents a fundamental transformation. "Instead of waiting for disease to manifest, we can identify individual risks early and intervene proactively," he says.

The startup has served around 100 clients while validating its technology with over 1,800 patients. This year, they're scaling to 1,000 customers.

One crucial innovation sets SugarStrings apart: their machine learning system analyzes genetic data across diverse populations with 94.89% accuracy. Most global genetic databases rely heavily on European ancestry data, which can miss important mutations in other populations.

The company takes data security seriously too, especially after the 23andMe breach affected 6.9 million users. SugarStrings decentralizes data to minimize hacking risks and complies with international healthcare privacy standards.

As genetic testing becomes more affordable and accessible, millions of people could soon know their health risks decades before symptoms appear—giving them the power to prevent diseases rather than just treat them.
