Ahmedabad Invests $1.2M to Train 60,000 Kids for 2036 Olympics

India's Olympic dreams just got a powerful boost from an unexpected place: elementary and middle school classrooms in Ahmedabad.

The Ahmedabad Municipal School Board proposed a groundbreaking $1.2 million investment to transform thousands of students into potential Olympic athletes. The initiative targets 60,000 kids enrolled in grades six through eight across the city's 453 municipal schools.

The program starts with 60 students who've already proven themselves at state and national competitions. These young champions will train at three top-tier facilities: Veer Savarkar Sports Complex, Memco Sports Complex, and Vastral Sports Complex.

But the real magic happens in what comes next. The board will screen thousands more students through a rigorous nine-step selection process led by the District Sports Officer. Every selected athlete gets professional coaching, proper equipment, and access to facilities that were once out of reach for kids from municipal schools.

Administrative Officer L D Desai explained that students will be scouted from Khel Mahakumbh and various sports competitions organized by the school board and sports associations. The program will hire additional sports teachers on contract to handle the expanded training load beyond the existing 73 faculty members.

The program also celebrates excellence beyond athletics. As part of the school board's centenary celebrations, they'll honor 100 outstanding schools and 100 star teachers with a separate $1.2 million fund.
