AI Detects Heart Disease in Seconds Using Standard ECG Tests

Heart disease often hides until it's too late, but artificial intelligence just changed the game for early detection.

Researchers in the UK have developed an AI tool that can identify heart failure and valve disease from standard electrocardiogram readings. The ECG, a simple test measuring electrical heart activity, has been used for decades but could never detect these life-threatening conditions before.

The difference matters more than you might think. When doctors suspect heart disease today, they order an echocardiogram, essentially an ultrasound of the heart. Patients often wait months for these appointments, and during that time, their condition can worsen silently.

The British Heart Foundation funded the breakthrough, which was presented at the European Society of Cardiology's annual congress in Munich. The AI was trained on data from millions of patients to spot tiny abnormalities that human eyes miss.

In a clinical trial involving 67,000 patients in the United States, the results were remarkable. The model caught 81% of heart failure cases and 90% of heart valve disease cases.

Professor Fu Siong Ng from Imperial College London, who worked on the study, explained the practical impact. "Patients can often wait several months for a heart ultrasound scan after being referred for one by their doctor," he said. This technology could identify the highest-risk patients so they get scans faster and more urgently.

The timing couldn't be better. About one billion ECGs are performed worldwide every year, making it one of medicine's most common tests. The AI can check for heart disease markers during any routine ECG, even when doctors are looking for something else entirely.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't just about catching disease earlier. It's about transforming how healthcare systems use resources they already have. Every hospital and clinic already performs ECGs. Adding AI analysis doesn't require new equipment or appointments, just smarter interpretation of existing tests.

Dr. Sonya Babu-Narayan, a consultant cardiologist with the British Heart Foundation, acknowledged the technology won't catch everyone. But it could be a solution to help fast-track the patients who are most likely to have a heart abnormality, she noted.

The real power lies in prevention. Heart failure's first outwardly visible symptom is often cardiac arrest or sudden cardiac death. By the time patients feel sick enough to seek help, significant damage has already occurred. This AI gives doctors a chance to intervene years earlier, when treatment can make the biggest difference.
