WeatherNext cracked this problem by training on both regular weather data and cyclone information. The model now generates 1,000 different scenarios for each developing storm, helping forecasters understand the range of possible outcomes. Last year, it could only produce 50 scenarios.

The AI achieved another first with Hurricane Melissa. Forecasters predicted it would become a Category 5 hurricane when it was still only Category 1, allowing them to warn communities about rapid intensification that can turn a manageable storm into a disaster overnight.

Even the researchers don't fully understand how their model works so well. It uses much lower-resolution data than traditional forecasting models, yet somehow extracts better predictions from it. "That gives physicists a signal that something is happening that was not previously understood," says DeepMind researcher Ferran Alet.
The model surprised even the scientists who built it. "The results were so good that we were skeptical," says Kate Musgrave, who leads the tropical cyclone group at the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere. When they tested it in real-time forecasts, its performance held up. "I think everybody was surprised at just how well it did."
Weather forecasters now use WeatherNext alongside their other tools, combining AI insights with traditional models and human expertise. No single model is perfect for every storm, but having AI in the mix gives communities facing hurricanes something invaluable: more time to protect what matters most.
