AI Robot Helps Hospital Patients Get Medical Answers

Imagine walking into a hospital and having a friendly robot answer your health questions with the patience of a librarian and the knowledge of a medical team.

Researchers at the University of Twente in the Netherlands just made that happen. They partnered with a local hospital to test a social robot that talks to patients about their conditions using AI technology. The robot has a face, makes expressions, maintains eye contact, and chats naturally with patients.

Twenty-one patients with osteoarthritis and seven healthcare professionals tried out the system. The results were encouraging: people found it easy to use and actually enjoyed talking with it. Patients described the conversations as accessible and pleasant, while medical staff saw potential in the approach.

Lead researcher Jan-Willem van 't Klooster is careful not to oversell the findings. "We investigated whether such a system can function in practice, not whether it already improves care," he explains. The team focused on whether people would accept the technology before testing if it truly makes healthcare better.

The smart part is how they controlled the AI. Instead of letting the robot pull information from anywhere on the internet, researchers limited it to pre-approved medical websites that doctors had already validated. This safeguard dramatically reduces the risk of the AI making up false information or giving dangerous advice.

"The debate is often about whether you should use AI in healthcare," says van 't Klooster. "We show that it's mainly about how you set it up."

The project brought together behavioral scientists, healthcare providers, designers, and international partners. Testing happened not just in sterile labs but in the messy reality of daily hospital life, where staff are stretched thin and patients need clear information they can understand.

Healthcare systems worldwide are struggling with staff shortages and growing demand for care. Tools like this robot could help fill information gaps, freeing up medical professionals to focus on direct patient care while ensuring people still get the answers they need.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't just about one robot in one hospital. The approach shows how AI can work alongside humans rather than replacing them, with medical professionals staying in control of what information gets shared. Other hospitals could adapt similar systems to help with patient education, appointment reminders, or post-treatment care instructions.

The team is already planning follow-up studies. They're currently investigating what language level works best so the robot can communicate clearly with patients of all education backgrounds. Long-term research will explore whether patients remember information better when it comes from a physical robot rather than a screen or pamphlet.

Healthcare with a human touch might soon include a robotic smile too.
